Welcome to the website of the Association for Welsh Writing in English.

The Association originated as a completely private initiative in December 1984, when individuals from five of the colleges of the then University of Wales (Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Lampeter and Swansea) met at Swansea to discuss establishing an organisation to promote the study of Welsh writing in English.

The Association which resulted from those discussions now exists to promote the study and scholarship of Welsh writing in English, to foster the life of the critical community that has been established around such scholarly activity, and to provide a forum through which the field of study itself can be both promoted and enhanced.

Membership of the Association is open to anyone, and we welcome members both from within and beyond academia.

The annual conference of the Association is a key focus of our work, and takes place in the late spring/early summer every year. Our first conference was held in 1986.
The Association is also responsible for producing a scholarly journal, the International Journal of Welsh Writing in English, published by the University of Wales Press in collaboration with leading digital Open Access provider the Open Library of Humanities. This is the only scholarly journal dedicated solely to the study of Welsh writing in English, in all its forms, from its earliest origins to the present day.

The photographs on this page (from originals © Aidan Byrne) both feature Gregynog Hall, where the AWWE conference is held each year.
